Job Description


The Bed Flow/Staffing Coordinator will be responsible for performing daily staffing and patient location assignments throughout the Multispecialty and Research Hospital's nursing division. Facilitates transfers within the hospital as well as outside facilities. The position is responsible for triaging and prioritizing requests to promote safe, efficient patient access, flow and discharge.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates closely with Nursing Leadership, Administrative House Supervisor, or designee to make effective staffing and patient placement assignments.
  • Monitors bed availability and alerts supervisors and/or nursing leaders when additional resources are needed. Monitors daily discharge delays and escalations.
  • Receives and triages critical, high, normal, and low requests for internal access points including ACC, OR, and inpatient units and coordinates transfers to outside facilities. Documents all requests.
  • Provides relevant patient information to the clinical team for patient care such as estimated time of arrival, conditions, special precautions, and admission instructions.
  • Attends hospital capacity meetings/huddles.
  • Maintains accurate and timely records, logs, files, and related information as required.
  • Throughout shift reconciles the hospital census, verifying that patients are listed in the correct beds within the bed management system.
  • Follows staffing plans to support safe, efficient delivery of patient care and communicates any deficits and/or challenges to leadership.
  • Manages call-off log and documents any changes in staffing assignments as required.
  • Implements established department staffing plans for all units, while working with unit leadership to understand acuity and patient/department needs.
  • Makes ongoing changes to staffing as determined by fluctuations in census and patient acuity, to assure safe delivery of care.
  • Supports quality assurance and improvement programs.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple members of the health care and administrative leadership teams.
  • Ability to contribute to initiatives and processes while supporting a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (including Word, Excel and Outlook) and proficiency with electronic health records with the ability to manage clinical/administrative data.
  • Knowledge of resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate work within schedule constraints and handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  • Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize workload to meet deadlines
  • Experience with shared governance, nurse engagement, and retention.
  • Ability to critically think and problem solve for staffing, clinical patient concerns, and appropriate bed assignment as well as other issues that arise.

EDUCATION:

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing program either by a governmental authority nursing board, or by a licensing authority that has jurisdiction over approval/accreditation of nursing programs (Texas BON 217.1).
  • Associate's degree in Nursing is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

Current Texas Board of Nursing RN or Compact State RN license

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire
