Job Description
Under close supervision, performs phlebotomy, processes specimens, handles client inquiries, conducts waived testing, and contributes to pre-analytic laboratory tasks.
Responsibilities
- Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood specimens from patients.
- Receives and accessions specimens into the laboratory information system (LIS).
- Prepares and aliquots specimens for various laboratory tests according to established protocols.
- Monitors and maintains appropriate inventory levels of laboratory supplies.
- Provides information regarding specimen collection, test requisitions, and laboratory procedures.
- Addresses inquiries and concerns; escalates complex issues to the appropriate personnel.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable quality control and quality assurance measures.
- Assists in the preparation and setup of laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Ensures the proper handling and transportation of specimens within the laboratory.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Ability to answer incoming calls from clients, healthcare professionals, and patients.
- Knowledge on how to label, document, and prepare collected specimens for transport to the laboratory.
- Ability to verify the accuracy of patient information and specimen labeling.
- Knowledge of recording and maintaining accurate documentation of waived test results.
- Ability to collaborate with laboratory staff to maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Knowledge of relevant laboratory safety and infection control protocols.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) is an asset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Completion of a certified phlebotomy program is preferred
EXPERIENCE:
- 1 year of experience in phlebotomy and specimen processing
